President: Soundy Vejasilp |
Soundy Vejasilp was the Assistant Treasurer of SAMA, but now she has followed in Jia-Hao's footsteps and become the Almighty President. She is a keen advocate of Sword Art Online, but her heart is true to her real love, Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso. Her symphony resonates in her work and love for SAMA.
Once you know her, she is one of the friendliest and sweetest people you will ever meet! Although she might seem a little shy and timid, don’t let her small stature fool you. She is one of the most loveliest persons you’ll meet. Unlike what people would think, Kirito is not her husbando, in fact Armin from Attack on Titan is the one for her (She would absolutely love if you got her anything Armin-ish). JK Rowling, she actually likes Levi. She would also never ever turn down the opportunity for bubble tea, especially Share Tea - Cheese foam Black Oolong 80% sugar, less ice (she literally lives off that). Not convinced that she’s the best girl of the whole committee after listing all the pros? Just approach her during one of the events and you will be immediately enlightened and realise the mistakes you have made in your life and that you should have been worshipping her from the start. Did you ever wonder how someone could be more dedicated than Soundy? Seriously like there’s no one more dedicated than her, even Kim Jong Un was nowhere as dedicated to building his nuclear arsenal than Soundy is to SAMA. You might have realised by now that Soundy is our newest lord and savior, the most adorable and shortest president of SAMA to have ever walked this planet. She is always there to greet you with a heart-warming smile and answer any question or help with whatever you need. Feel free to contact her via her Facebook or by email at tvej1@student.monash.edu. Finally, who is this again? |
As the anime gods looked over the SAMA empire, they knew, this man was meant for greatness. Don’t be intimidated by his force of personality, they said, for his personality is what makes him, the perfect contribution to your anime empire.
Former secretary and now serving as SAMA’s Vice President, Kageya- oops I meant, Alex Ong, is back, biceps bulging and ready to give you the perfect set. We’ve all seen him in action, on the volleyball courts or fulfilling his SAMA duties - there’s no question about it, this guy is good at what he does. Well, except for his lame puns – although Alex, you are definitely, “one in a melon” (Alex Ong, 2018). Relentlessly responsible and the backbone of any team, this ace team player is always living up to expectations and ready to give it his all. With his “You don’t win alone, that’s just how it is” mindset, Alex’s devotion to SAMA and its members is surely something worth noting. Unbeknownst to many of the members, Alex painstakingly practices his anime title pronunciations as a daily ritual in hopes to impress at the next trivia night. He’s hard-working and determined, so be sure to listen out folks! He’ll be sure to “show you a sight you’ve never seen before”. For those who have yet to be charmed by this wonder of a human, feel free to hit him up at apong5@student.monash.edu for any questions. I can assure you, despite his initial intimidating but charismatic gaze, this guy will make you feel right at home with SAMA. |
Vice President: Alex Ong |
Treasurer: Kevin Chen |
Kevin is a penguin. Also a chicken. Also a polar bear. Okay he is a lot of things but most importantly he is the Treasurer of SAMA. A second year Engineering and Commerce Specialist student, he is proficient in counting every penny that he gets his eyes on. A lover of Oregairu and Your Lie in April, he often finds himself watching the same old episode trying to hold back the tears. Of course he also enjoys some comedy shows such as Cory in the House and Saekano, he does like to laugh out loud once in a while.
As a former media manager, he prides himself in his extensive knowledge of where to find exquisite snacks for bargain prices, *cough COSTCO cough*. Some of his favourites are Cheezels and whatever is on discount in the roasted nuts section. If you ever find a bag of Cheezels please return it to Kevin or he will put an eternal curse on your wretched soul. His friends love him, and when prompted they showered him in lavish praises such as “um…. He buys me chicken nuggets.” – Emily “I have to say good things about you right, you are my boss now.” – Hubert “loves dumplings more than me.” - Anna If you ever need help with choosing a waifu, or with anything really, come up to him at our events to have a chat! If you need to contact him but you are too shy kyaa~ you can email him at sche0033@student.monash.edu or send a message on Facebook. |
When university began, Winston found himself going through a time where he was unsure of himself and his identity, and sought to portray himself as an indifferent, devil-may-care Commerce student breezing through his degree, riding on the wave of “Ps get degrees”. This is my chance to be cool, Winston naively thought.
Luckily for him, he was not too cool for anime. Just as he began to sink into the espresso depresso grind of university life, Winston’s ‘cool’ exterior was shattered to little bits when he decided to procrastinate one day and watched Steins;Gate (now his favourite anime of all time) and Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso. Afterwards, lying on the floor in tears, curled in a ball, Winston felt like a raw, peeled potato-dono. He had been liberated. Now he started earnestly watching anime in all its forms (yes even those ones). As the years went by and university became more espresso and less depresso, Winston found himself one day realising that maybe he didn’t have to be cool, to be cool. Maybe he could just be himself. If SAMA was a fire, Winston was the chestnut that was roasted by it to release an aroma and flavour he had never knew he had within himself. Nowadays you will find Winston playing volleyball (thanks Haikyuu) whenever he can. He now also studies Computer Science. He applies to his studies and volleyball a level of dedication he never knew he had. Just like the top anime fight scene of all time, Principal Shinonome vs. deer, every day is a challenge, but it is now a challenge I embrace like an old friend. The spark that ignited this passion was SAMA, and it is time for him to return the favour. As Secretary, he will ensure to the best of his abilities that the committee runs like a well-fuelled moving castle. But on top of all the responsibilities and tasks required of his position, Winston will always remember the SAMA that embraced him for who he was and will strive his hardest to give that same feeling to all who seek a place to just be happy and appreciate anime and manga. Hit me up for a good time at wslam14@student.monash.edu. <3 Cyanara. |

Assistant Treasurer: Alina Wang |
Is she a SAMA utaite? Is she a sound engineer? Is she an artist? Is she a chef? Or is she all of them? Yes! That's right, it's Alina Wang, your kawaii kouhai and sugoii senpai, perfectly suited to the 'jack of all trades' role of assistant treasurer. Studying Education and Commerce in her second year at Monash Uni, assisting the treasurer as the.... assistant treasurer... and dealing with the finances of SAMA, you will be in capable hands.
Whilst she isn't always completely up to date in anime as others may be, you can be assured that her tastes in anime are as classic as they get. First off with the flavoursome Shokugeki no Soma, be ready to light your taste buds on fire as the spice queen herself educates you in the intricacies of Sichuan cuisine. Next up with K-ON, needless to say... ultra moe karaoke events anyone? Expect to see her bumbling around uni and SAMA events with glee. You'll probably find her listening to the latest utaite covers of vocaloid songs, thinking intently on the best pizza flavours to order or just helping out with general SAMA duties. Feel free to come up and have a chat to her on Facebook, or shoot any of your enquiries to qwan0014@student.monash.edu. |
How would you describe Hubert Zhu?
“I dunno, uh, eccentric? Very mechacentric?” “Kinda right but wrong in so many ways.” “It’s hard to make you sound human.” - Hubert’s Friends Current Media Manager of the Monash Society for Anime and Manga Appreciation. 2nd year Engineering and Science student. Sometimes a seller of lotto tickets to people with gambling addictions. May or may not want to shove his brain into a transforming car. Usually found hanging around in the Science Student Lounge studying, catching up on studying, or procrastinating by studying. The first thing you’d see if you were to look up the entry for “workaholic” in the dictionary. Hubert is almost the very ideal of such an unhealthy lifestyle, only held back from apotheosising into the actual concept by the fact that he kinda does know how to entertain himself, even if it’s something he sucks at. But thanks to his position on the Committee, ‘work’ and ‘fun’ have been combined into a singular ‘anime’ nature, allowing him to do what some others could only dream of: find joy in one’s work. Indeed, his control over the weekly screenings has allowed him the chance to torment the poor, hapless club members with a wide range of Japanese animated productions, some of which are misleading to his age (contrary to what his tastes would suggest, his birth certificate claims he was born at the end of last century). However, Hubert is an open-minded and merciful Media Manager, so if you no longer wish to watch any more of Golden Warrior Gold Lightan, alternative suggestions can be mailed to hzhu0004@student.monash.edu. |

Sponsorship Officer: Joey Gordon |
Ever wondered what Genghis Khan is doing at SAMA's events? Wonder no more, because it's just one of his many descendants. Like his ancestor before him, he is a conqueror: in the territory of a special genre of Mangas.Witness the glistening locks of hair flowing down his broad back at SAMA events as he walks around. Legends say he has the longest hair on committee.
Maybe it's Maybelline. But regardless of what you think of his hair or lineage, rest assured that Joey will plunge into the deepest, darkest corners for you, because he lives off of the things you find in the deepest and darkest corners of the interwebz. He may not seem like it but when it comes to sourcing *ahem* materials, you can rely on the Joey. Imagine him now, wearing twin ponytails and a bright smile on his face, intimid- persuading prospective sponsors to do our bidding. He's our version of kawaii LadyBeard! So if you need a guiding hand to lead you into a world of dank memes and questionable anime, look no further than Sponsorship Officer 2018-19, Genghis Khan Jr. Stay tuned as he reconquers not just the Mongolian Empire but also the hearts of SAMA. Ps. hit me up at jcgo5@student.monash.edu for an even better time ;) <3 |
SAMA’s resident simple country girl, Maddie describes herself as a ‘technology grandma’ and yet still managed to get the role of Social Representative. This girl loves tea more than her own life, and is convinced everything can be explained by her tarot cards, but she’s always ready to devote her time to SAMA!
When asked about her, friends said: "Young, dumb and broke is her personal anthem.” “Still not convinced she’s an adult.” “I’ve never seen a girl consume that much soup before.” “How can someone so smart be so stupid.” - High school teacher “Mum wants grandkids. Imma give her grandcats instead.” - when asked about her priorities in life. When she’s not winging her way through uni, Maddie’s been known to break out in salsa moves or in song to her latest music addiction. With a sense of humour as evil as Sasuke thought he was, Maddie takes joy in dragging her friends to the city for a “food adventure” after spending days wrapped up in a blanket watching anime. She’s always happy to help out so throw an email her way at mcre0002@student.monash.edu |

Creative Officer: Mark Phan |
Khoi Nguyen Phan, Phan Khoi Nguyen, Nguyen Khoi Phan, Mark Phan, this certain Creative Director goes by many names but his friends just call him Mark. His passion for anime and manga had brought him to SAMA and his dedication to the creative arts had lead him to this position.
If you’ve just met him, he’s that one quiet guy that’s always waiting in a conversation to put in a well-thought out one liners or input , but be careful, if you’re too close to him, you’ll have to hear him spouting nonsense and bad jokes non-stop. It’s a certain humor and only few can enjoy, but you don’t have to mind pointing out how stupid it is cause even he knows it’s stupid. Other than that, he’s a super mellow guy that’s great to hang and chill with. He can be a bit a passive in social situation, but he’ll happily be able to reply to any topics you give him so don’t mind walking up to him and start talking. Only then, you would realise that you have access to one of SAMA largest random fun fact libraries of any topics you could of think of and his insights to these topics may be very interesting to explore. Mark’s dedication to his craft can be seen through the progression of his work. Only starting to dabble in the creative arts around 4 years ago, he has self-taught himself to create some really magnificent works in those short years. His quest for self-improvement continues as he shapes the visual identity of SAMA for the coming year. Mark’s dedication and presence will surely makes SAMA a welcoming place and don’t mind hitting him up at knpha2@student.monash.edu or his Facebook for the best time <3 |
