"Fear not the shadow beasts, camp will be LIT" - somebody at camp probably.
Current president of Monash's Society for Anime and Manga Appreciation. 3rd year Engineering and Commerce student. Sometimes confused with Hubert the Media Manager, but is most definitely not. Effectively the human embodiment of fire and tofu, “fofu”, his natural habitat is the firepit and is more than willing to provide warmth in the form of fire or hugs to all that want it. Furniture for the discord server’s voice channel since its inception, it’s unknown what he does there. An avid fan of cars and martial arts which carries over into his taste in anime and manga where all he seems to watch is wangan midnight, initial d and redline, having even managed to not see some Ghibli films! (BLASPHEMY!) Despite these very specific preferences he still manages to watch some other shows, and is constantly hunting new shows, manga and music. Talk to to him about food and drink too, for that’s another easy way to spend about 3 hours of your time. Contrary to popular belief the Prez is actually just a big marshmallow at heart and is readily available in the SAMA discord voice channels for when you have suggestions, want to pass the time with someone or just generally not feel lonely. |
Ko Wei Zhe, or Lewis (because why pronounce 3 syllables when you can do 2?), is the vice president of SAMA 2019/20. A mechanical engineering student who may rue his past decisions for choosing this course because he “likes anything science” and “wants to contribute to technological advancement”.
Aside from his bizarre affection for JoJo, his other favourite animes include Steins;Gate (who doesn’ttbh), Oregairu (Yukinon best girl don’t @ me), Monogatari Series (head tilts for days) just to name a few. Generally flexible when it comes to anime, though isekai isn’t his forte (still loved NGNL Konosuba Re:Zero tho). Nevertheless open to suggestions and recommendations, especially ones that has a good story. One usually finds him constantly making JoJo references unironically or ironically (mostly both). Dude probably made more JoJo references than the number of sliced bread he had his whole life. Usually browses reddit for his daily dosage of memes if he isn’t procrastinating, enjoying Chinese cartoons, or grinding playing Girls Frontline (id: 288759 if you’re interested). Outside from his web of degeneracy, Lewis is an avid follower of football (soccer) and has been a Manchester United supporter for well over a decade. His hobbies include playing badminton, chess (both Western and Chinese), and DotA 2 as well as reading novels (extra food if you’ve read the Percy Jackson series). If you wanna talk to me about JoJo and their beautiful duwangs or just about anything else, don’t be afraid to approach me at events/meetups or simply email him at wzko2@student.monash.edu. |

“I like how the treasurers are the sane ones” - Not me.
Perhaps it’s because I speak in first person from my own perspective, rather than third person. My words and actions always carry my soul, which means I sometimes leave it all over the place. If you have found parts of it, please return. Anywho, people like to give me names. Kacchan, Hua-chan, Chef. Not sure why. Is my name that hard to pronounce? And on the odd occurence that my name is stated, it comes under a barrage of badly spoken puns. Hwhat are you hwatching? Hwow was your day? Hwhat’s up? But feel free to use any of these in your day to day speech, or come up with your own. Who knows? It could be the next big thing. A little about me though. My passion (other than anime) is Maths, the more abstract the better. I just hope that my mind would be able to comprehend the ideas without breaking. I’m not sure where this passion comes from, but it is deeply ingrained within me. It is now inseparable from me and I hope it will continue to amuse, confuse and excite me. Mathematics is a language, used to communicate ideas to other people, and knowing the purpose, or sometimes lack thereof, makes it more understandable. Not really had too much of an interest in figurines. Weird, I know, but I do have a soft spot for plushees. I’ve watched anime since I was a child, watching them in Chinese dub. So I’ve watched a fair amount of shows. I don’t always remember them, but they give me an impression, for better or for worse. Usually better. As most of you can tell, I’m quite harmless. However, I do have a bit of a competitive spirit. I don’t like to lose, not very happy about that. I’m always willing to chat, but I sometimes find it a bit awkward. I’ll try my very best. |
It was O-Week, and ZJ was walking around the club stalls. Nothing much interested him, but as soon as he saw the Society for Anime and Manga Appreciation tent, his otaku senses piqued. Aside from immediately signing up to the club for a measly $5, he saw the cool shirts the committee members were wearing, and asked where he could buy them. However, he was brutally shot down by Hubert, who told him that only ‘committee’ members could possess such a blessing. It was at this moment, that he knew, what had to be done...
Fresh out of an all boys high school 😞, Zhijie, ZJ, Zooj, or Ce3JaY_kA0, is your SAMA Secretary for 2019/20. Questioning his life choices in whether the 1.5 hour transport time for doing Computer Science at Monash is worth it, ZJ is otherwise a maths loving, jolly pseudo-NEET who also happens to love anime. With nearly 6 years of experience as being a weeaboo, Zooj has great passion in anime, with a taste in a diverse range of genres, including Comedy-Isekai, Romance-Isekai, and Fantasy-Isekai. Apart from those, Zhijie also loves anime such as Steins;Gate, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Samurai Champloo and Fruits Basket. Manga and light novels are also interests of ZJ’s, though the only motivation for him to read them is due to the impatience from waiting for season two for various shows (Hataraku maou-sama?? No Game No Life??? Wheres Season 2 Grrrrr) His interests also transcend simple media, as he has also played a few visual novels (Clannad, Lucy -The Eternity She Wished For-). He also has a somewhat intriguing knowledge of the ‘underground’ of Japanese media. For the interest of public safety, he will not disclose any details now, but perhaps, maybe there’ll be an emergence of some kind. Apart from the otakuness, ZJ also enjoys other stuff in life. That stuff includes playing soccer, supporting Athletic Bilbao, and being a competitive Counter Strike Global-Offensive player. Nevertheless, despite the otherwise jovial nature depicted, he can get serious at times, and he promises that he will devote all his energy to SAMA. He’s always up for a chat on any platform that he owns, and he can be reached from his email at zcao0010@student.monash.edu for anything! Thanks for reading friends!!! |

Assistant Treasurer: Kelly Koay |
If you see a random girl helping out the committee, you’re probably looking at the Assistant Treasurer, Kelly! As an accounting major, Kelly deals with numbers more than she deals with food (which she absolutely loves, especially noodles <3). When she’s not busy thinking about food, she’s busy thinking how to shoot her shots on the basketball court. She’ll be happy to take a 1v1 on the court any time...and also on Summoner’s Rift when she’s not carrying the burden that is our ex-secretary (biggest feeder I’ve ever seen).
She enjoys watching anime like rascal does not dream of bunny-girl senpai and haikyuu!! Kageyama is her #1 bae, even though he can be a salty boi. One day, she wishes to be able to set as good as him uwu. Even though this might seem like an impossible goal, Kelly is actually a surprisingly hard worker - no matter what the task is, she’ll happily do it for the members of the club ^_^ She'd say more but you can come and find out yourself. Feel free to approach her, she's as sweet as my bio :D You can contact her at kkoa0001@student.monash.edu! |
How would you describe Hubert Zhu?
“I dunno, uh, eccentric? Very mechacentric?” “Kinda right but wrong in so many ways.” “It’s hard to make you sound human.” - Hubert’s Friends We’ve entered an endless recursion of time. The Media Manager of the Monash Society for Anime and Manga Appreciation. A 3rd year doing his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and Science, as well as a Diploma of Languages in Chinese Studies. May or may not want to shove his brain into a transforming car. Usually found hanging around in the Science Student Lounge studying, catching up on studying, or procrastinating by studying. The first thing you’d see if you were to look up the entry for “workaholic” in the dictionary. Hubert is almost the very ideal of such an unhealthy lifestyle, only held back from apotheosising into the actual concept by the fact that he kinda does know how to entertain himself, even if it’s something he sucks at. But thanks to his position on the Committee, ‘work’ and ‘fun’ have been combined into a singular ‘anime’ nature, allowing him to do what some others could only dream of: find joy in one’s work. Incidentally, it’s very easy for Hubert to pretend he’s happy. In any case, his control over the weekly screenings has allowed him the chance to torment the poor, hapless club members with a wide range of Japanese animated productions, some of which are misleading to his age (contrary to what his tastes would suggest, his birth certificate claims he was born at the end of last century). However, Hubert is an open-minded and merciful Media Manager, so if you no longer wish to watch any more of 亜空大作戦スラングル, alternative suggestions can be mailed to hzhu0004@student.monash.edu. |

Sponsorship Officer: Leon Liu |
Do you like to breathe oxygen? Are you a human being? Do you think that anyone who looks down on anime is an uneducated, uncultured swine?
If so! Then Leon is the committee member for you! Leon does Commerce/Law at Monash and is your sponsorship officer, but enough with the boring stuff, you want to know how you can start a conversation with Leon! Simply walk up and press (A), dialogue options are extremely broad! Leon is willing to have simple conversations like “what should we all do with our lives,” to far more dynamic and important topics that humanity has spent eons trying to answer, like, “who is best girl?” “Leon is a great dude, he is extremely smart, funny and humble.”- Everyone. “I think Leon would be the best Sponsorship officer for this club out of all the candidates present”- You. (probably) “I don’t like Leon that much”- People with horrible taste. Feel free to add Leon on Facebook for ease of contact and don’t hesitate to recommend any sponsors or just have a friendly chat :) |
owo? What’s this? A pwofwile? *pounces right in*
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s…! Another weeaboo… Disappointed, ey? That someone could uwu their way into SAMA’s heart, just as SAMA did to their’s. But who is this person? The one that seems to whizz about, as yellow as an electric rat with humour as cringey as otou-san jokes (TL/N: otou-san means dad). The one who has the ability to make a whole room groan thanks to their slow wit yet relentless puns. Whoever, or whatever, they are, make sure you have a translator on hand, because if you thought it was Dio? You guessed wrong. Christie has been a weeb in the making for 13 years but the merch purchases have only exponentially spiked within the last three months. She now wakes up to not only anthropomorphised gems but also her favourite anthropomorphised sword boy plastered to her wall. Christie has too much energy when she’s with her friends. If you want to settle her down, give her a mildly lengthy journal article to read and she’ll be out on the ground in just two paragraphs. But beware - her reflexes are quick. Thanks to a radioactive BL manga that bit her in her first-year of uni, her phone will be out in seconds to capture any juicy scene before her thanks to her tingling fujoshi senses. BL may be her specialty, but that’s not her only interest. She’s a megane character, so there’s only one explanation for her glasses - knowledge! She’s the jack of all trades, yet a master in none. If you mention any relatively recent anime or manga, she may know it thanks to her attention to various anime news sources. Don’t be afraid to approach her, she may already know a thing or two already. If you ever come across this wild Pokémon, be sure to give her a pat on the head and you’ll have instantly befriended the uwumon. Don’t be frightened by her mannerisms though! She means no harm. If you’ve any qwuestwions fwor dwis owdd won, contact her at cgia12@student.monash.edu, or find her on Facebook. Then you’ll be asking yourself.... Is this a pigeon? |

Creative Officer: Nicholas Gamble |
New to anime, new to the club, new to the committee, he still wonders how he became a weeb in such a short time. Going from almost zero knowledge of anime and manga to the Creative Director of none other than SAMA itself in less than a year is no small feat, but when it comes to Nick, it’s all or nothing. Ironically he has more unfinished art than completed pieces, so I guess it’s more often nothing. Not when it comes to SAMA though, for once he becomes truly invested in something he goes all out.
Nick’s non-anime interests include astronomy, art, writing, reading, bonsai, and Japanese culture, the latter of which must have been a slippery slope down to where he is now. So while he eagerly waits for the construction of a colony on Mars, he spends his time on such activities as art, writing, and procrastinating study by working away at his to-watch list, which paradoxically keeps getting longer. Nick’s first anime, and the one that kicked off his interest was Erased, soon followed by Your Lie in April and Beyond the Boundary, and to this day they remain some of his most beloved shows. However, it would not come as a surprise to anybody if it turned out that he’s watched the least anime of all the committee, only having completed 47 shows at the time of writing. All those hours probably could have been used doing something productive, but he doesn’t regret a second of it, even though that might have contributed to him failing maths last year. Did I mention he applied for a course transfer to swap maths for Japanese? Fear not for his future though, for this otaku also studies the stereotypical otaku course, I.T., so maybe he isn’t totally hopeless. Despite appearing aloof and distant to those with whom he is unacquainted, once he gets to know you, he will open right up, perhaps a little too much in fact, and you’ll realise that maybe he’s actually an alien (why else did you think he’s so interested in space?) Rest easy though, for even if Nick is an alien, he just wants to enjoy life on this planet and get along with everyone. So if you ever see Nick, don’t hesitate to stop him and have a chat about art, astronomy, anime, or anything at all. |
